TROTTING INSOLENT SHOULD JUSTIFY HOPES

Probationary Drivers’ Race At Ashburton Insolent, an easy winner at Washdyke a fortnight ago, will be a popular fancy for the Autumn Handicap, a race for probationary drivers on the first day of the Ashburton Trotting Club’s winter meeting today. Insolent, a member of D. P. Grice’s team, is a hard-pulling four-year-old by U. Scott from Haughty. If he begins reasonably well his driver is unlikely to have any option but to take him to the front. The pace is certain to be strong and may find the most of Insolent’s opponents wanting in the long Ashburton straight. Insolent is expected to start at short odds, but after his win at Washdyke it is difficult to see him beaten.

Island Mist made up ground for second to Gentles in her division of the saddle race at Addington last week. The Dillon Hall mare has not a very strong form background, but she will only have to race as w*ll today to be the hardest for Insolent to beat.

Guiness made up ground for eighth at Washdyke recently. He has had very little experience, but looks to have plenty of ability. The firmer footing expected at Ashburton should suit him and he should be hard to beat.

Deep Lead has finished seventh in his two starts this season and he could be on the verge of worthwhile form. He lost ground at the start of his race at Addington last week and could be harder to beat in this field. Count Cavan, third at Addington last week, Young Donald and Del Rosa are others expected to add interest to the finish. Distance Suits Rapuwai, a winner at Washdyke when having his first start for many months, could carry on his winning way in the Stewards’ Handicap, the main race on the programme for trotters. Rapuwai has a splendid style of trotting and the distance of today's race—l2 furlongs—should suit him. Chances Are has not raced since she was an unlucky second to Fiammetta at Methven in March. She was one of three horses with which her ownertrainer. W. J. Doyle, accented but the other two were balloted out.

Fourina and Clackmannan will represent J. L. Behrns. who won this race 12 months ago with Alight. Fourina has disappointed at her two starts since winning decisively at Hutt Park. She is better than her recent efforts suggest, and could easily win. Mighty Hanover and Welburn look the pick of the others on the front, while Merry Nora. Rojo and Superway should do best of the handicapped -horses. The double will be, run on the Durbar Handicap and the Harvest Handicap. The scratching of Van Rush has robbed the first leg of considerable interest Notify is entitled to favouritism, with Femside Lad. King Anjou and Atone also expected to race 'prominently. . Young Betty, Jimmy Grattan *and Grouse form a likely trio for 4he second leg, which has drawn a large and open field.

A few showers are forecast for today, but unless there is *tieavy rain, the track will be in splendid order. Acceptances:—
