PEOPLE IN THE PLAY
The young Woolston hockey player, B. J. Aldridge, has been showing good form this season in his club’s
senior side. He has been chosen as inside - left for the Canterbury team to play Nelson at Nelson on Monday. During the summer Aldridge plays senior
tennis, also for the Woolston club. He represented Canterbury at lawn tennis on several occasions last season.
The biggest surprise in the Northland open table tennis championships was the defeat of the New Zealand singles title holder, A. Tomlinson, by G. Frew (Whangarei) in a five-set singles final. Frew also recorded wins in the men's doubles and mixed doubles.
Unbeaten at Riccarton Domain this season. Shamrock lost one record when G. Proost, the Neerlandia inside left, notched his side’s only goal last Saturday. This was the first goal conceded by the Shamrock goal-keeper, J. Callaghan, at the domain this season. Shamrock's enviable list of performances “at home’’ has been 6-0 v. H. 5.0.8., 4-0 v. Atlantis, 9-0 v. University and 4-1 v. Neerlandia.
Inclusion in the Canterbury representative soccer team has been well merited in the case of H. Taylor, the Shamrock left-half. His form has- improved as the season has progressed and his tireless display, punctuated by a flow of beautiful passes to his forwards, against Neerlandia last Saturday reached a standard of controlled and intelligent play seldom seen in Christchurch club matches.
Among the try-scorers for the Southern Division Rugby League team which beat the French team 35-10 a few days ago was L. Mulcare, who played several games for Canterbury about five years, ago.
Notable progress has been made this season in Canterbury table tennis by R. B.
McCallum, one ■ of the profl vince's leading fl interme dia t e fl players. The || 19 - year - old I| McCallum fl who won the B Can terb u r y B junior title in B 1958. was a v member of the fo Selwyn team " which won the
A grade competition last season, and this year he has not suffered a loss in nine matches so far. Last week he played his father, A. B. McCallum, in the inter-club competition. The latter is a former representative player, but the younger McCallum secured a comfortable victory in this match.
