NEW RAILWAYS EQUIPMENT
Acceptance Of British
Tender
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 3.
A tender has been accepted for the supply of diesel engines and electrical equipment for the 20 diesel-electric locomotives to be built in railway workshops. Announcing this, the Minister of Railways (Mr Moohan) said that the successful tenderers were British firms.
The order is for 20 sets of equipment, each set comprising two 210-horsepower diesel engines and associated electrical gear. In addition, four spare enginegenerator sets will be supplied. “Delivery is expected to begin within 12 months from the placing of the order. Thereafter the contract provided for the supply of two locomotive sets of equipment a month,” said the Minister. Cabinet approval of the construction of 20 diesel-electric shunting locomotives costing £BOO,OOO was announced last December. Ten are to be built at the Hillside railway workshops, Dunedin, and 10 at the Addington railway workshops. The completed locomotives will be allocated to busy shunting yards in both the North and South Islands.
“The equipment that has now
been ordered will enable the first of the 20 new locomotives to be completed toward the end of next year,” said Mr Moohan.
