FATHER’S GIFT OF BLOOD

Gratitude For Aid Given Son

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 3.

Just 17 days ago, Robert Ritchie, aged 13, of Mount Roskill, had an operation at Green Lane Hospital to repair a hole in his heart. Today, his father, Mr Charles Ritchie, became a blood donor for the first time. His donation was a “bottle Of thanks” for those who gave blood for Robert’s operation. “Good on you, dad,” said Robert when he was told this morning that his father had become a blood donor. Nineteen Auckland men and women gave blood to keep Robert alive while the heart surgeon was operating on him. Some of it was transfused directly into Robert and the rest was supplied for the "artificial heart” machine, which took over when Robert’s heart was stopped for the hole to be repaired. Mr Ritchie said: “It’s the least I could do. I didn’t realise just how many people are involved in supplying blood for operations.”
