58 Nominations Made For General Election

At least seven newcomers to the House of Representatives will appear to be sworn in as members after the General Election whatever the results of polling. The actual number is likely to be more.

Occupants of some seats are certain to lose their places;' but, apart from that, there are pre-election factors that can cause changes.

More retirements of sitting members may yet be announced; and it is possible for a sitting member to be successfully challenged for electorate candidacy from within his own party.

So ‘ far, nine retirements have been announced by sitting members. Two of the vacancies will be sought by former members of Parliament; the other seven by newcomers to national politics. / Two sitting members who hope to remain in Parliament will first have to overcome the claims to nominations by party colleagues. Nominations have been made steadily over the last two months and up to yesterday 58 had been recorded? More than 300 candidates are expected to contest seats in the poll (for which no date has been announced). Thirty-one of these have been made by National Party branches, and 17 by the Social Credit Political League. The league has announced its intention to contest all 80 seats, for the third consecutive time. The seven Labour candidates named were the sole nominees for electorate representation. Labour representation will not be put into full swing until after the party's conference this month. , Retirements The retirements from politics announced up to date are:— Messrs J. B. Kent (Westland). T. Omana (Eastern Maori), J B. F. Cotterill (Wanganui), P N Holloway (Heretaunga), Government members; Messrs S. W. Smith (Hobson), J. T. Watts (Fendalton). D. M. Rae (Eden). J. J. Maher (Otaki), J. A. Roy (Clutha), Opposition members. The two men making comebacks are Messrs H. R. Lake and J. Rae, both under National colours. Mr Lake, the former member for Lyttelton, has gained the Fendalton nomination; and Mr Rae. who when Minister of Housing was defeated as the member of Roskill, will try for Eden. Two former National Government ministers who have been mentioned as possible candidates have publicly said they will not be trying this election. They are Mr W. H. Fortune (a former Minister of Police) and Mr E. H Halstead (Industries and Commerce). Apart from Mr Watts, all other sitting Canterbury members are available for candidacy, it is understood, and no further retirement is expected to be announced in this area. Those allowing their names, to go forward once again are Messrs R. M. Macfarlane (Christchurch Central), N. E. Kirk (Lyttelton). J. Mathison (Avon). M. A. Connelly (Riccarton). N. G. Pickering (St. Albans). Miss M. B Howard (Sydenham). Government members: and Messrs J. K. McAlpine (Selwyn). W. H. Gillespie (Hurunui),* R. G. Gerard (Ashburton), and T L. Hayman (Waitaki). Interna) Challenges One Labour parliamentarian and a National member are being challenged for candidacy. The Labour man is Mr W. Freer (Mount Albert); and the National member is Mr W. A. Sheat (Egmont). Mr H. F. Callagher. a former secretary of the Auckland Labour Representation Committee, will contest the candidature with Mr Freer.

Mr Sheat is being opposed for nomination by Mr Eric Pryor who has resigned as chairman of the party’s electorate committee in Hastings to enable his name to go forward for selection. . The surprise retirement of Mr Cotterill after 25 years representation of Wanganui in the House of Representatives (he is only 55) leaves only one member of the "Old Guard” when Labour swept to office in 1935 who has not reached Cabinet rank. The exception is Mr C. L. Carr (Timaru) who, in spite of rumours to the contrary, was last week declared to be the sole nominee for Labour representation in his electorate. Mr Carr, however, has held the office of chairman of committees in the House.

One woman appears in the list of nominations. She is Mrs H. A. Anderson, the National Party candidate for the Mount Albert seat. Mrs Anderson is the wife of the former Mayor of the Mount Albert borough. One withdrawal has already been made after nomination. That is the nomination of Mr W. B. Owen who has contested the Lyttelton seat on behalf of Social Cred|t at the two previous Gen-

eral Elections. Mr Owen has resigned from this group because of internal .policy disagreement. Nominations reported so far are as follows, sitting members being indicated with asterisks:
