Nurse Maude Appeal
The Nurse Maude District Nursing Association, which will hold its annual street appeal in Christchurch today, provides humanitarian services which must commend it to the generosity of every citizen. To meet the. challenge of changing social circumstances the association has expanded the scope of its work tremendously in recent years; but the high principles that actuated its founder 64 ypars ago remain its inspiration When most welfare services have become the direct respon Ability of the State, the maintenance of organisations able to draw upon voluntary effort and private finance is especially desirable if local communities are to discharge fully their duty to their less fortunate members
In Christchurch ana nearby areas the Nurse Maude Association’s district nurses and home aids have assumed increasingly important functions because, through their assistance, many persons who otherwise would be forced to enter institutions can stay in their own homes. For persons requiring institutional care the association has two well-equipped convalescent hospitals. In spite of government subsidies and gifts from patients—whose means do not determine their eligibility for help—the association depends upon private donations to balance its accounts The com munity would be the loser if. through lack of support, the association had to curtail its work
