EFFECT OF TV ON READING

‘Some Libraries May Be Forced To Close’

(Neio Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. June 2.

The advent of television in New Zealand will cause many suburban libraries to close and force a decline in sales of the lighter types of literature. This is the opinion of Mr P. Lock, an associ-ate-director of the 106-year-old publishing house of Ward Lock, who completed a New Zealand business tour in Auckland today.

“It's happened in England and it is only logical that it will happen here,” Mr Lock said. “You can’t read and watch television at the same time.”

Television had forced many suburban libraries out of business in England, he said. The effects on books sales in New Zealand—the last major country to obtain television—would probably not be noticed for five years. He said television “has not and will not affect” best-selling novels and other works.
