Sportsman’s Notebook RIG ENTRIES FOR STROKE TOURNAMENT AT WEEK-END

The Russley Golf Club's annual Queen’s Birthday week-end 72-holes stroke tournament has drawn very strong fields in each of the three grades. Entries, in fact, have been so numerous that the organisers have had to ballot out many. The tournament will be held on Saturday and Sunday Entries for the senior grade include four Canterbury Freyberg Rosebowl players, R. J. Charles, R. C. Murray, K. D. Foxton, and E. H. Richards. There are six with handicaps of one and six with two.

This is an important tournament for Murray, in particular After his rather erratic showing at the Rosebowl tournament his chances of selection for the New Zealand team to play in the world amateur championships at Philadelphia this year slumped considerably. With good scores for this tournament, however, he could force his way into a strong position for consideration.

Last year the championship was won by M. W. Stanley, who has since left Canterbury, after a tie with Charles and Foxton. In a play-off Stanley won with Charles second and Foxton third. * * $

It is reported that such proposals were discussed by New Zealand players with New South

Wales officials during the All Blacks’ visit to Sydney recently.

Hockey Tour An invitation for a New Zealand hockey team to tour Australia next year has been accepted by the New Zealand Hockey Association. New Zealand’s last visit to Australia was in 1956 when the hockey team competed at the Olympic Games in Melbourne. The Manning Memorial Cup, which is at present held by Australia, will be at stake. Both countries are sending teams to the Rome Olympics. # » ® Return To South Africa The Manawatu and New Zealand Rugby trialist, Murray Ball, has left New Zealand for South Africa. His father, a former All Black, is at present living in South Africa. Ball was not selected originally in the list of 75 players for the New Zealand trials at Easter, but was called in to replace R.
