NEW BRIGHTON SHOP HOURS
Saturday Trading To Be Reviewed
“In due course the whole question of Saturday trading in areas such as New Brighton right throughout New Zealand will have to be considered, but the matter will have to be brought before me as the Tribunal does not institute proceedings,” said the Shops and Officers Exemptions Tribunal (Mr H. J. Thompson, S.M.) yesterday. Pegasus Cycles, Ltd. (Mr A. K. Archer) was granted transfer of an existing exemption from Saturday closing from premises at 3 Oram avenue, New Brighton, to a shop at the corner of Oram avenue and Seavnew road. The exemption will not apply when a statutory holiday falls on a Saturday. The governing director and majority shareholder of Pegasus Cycles, Ltd. was Mr Harold Thomas Dean, who was at present overseas with the United Nations forces in Palestine, said Mr Archer. The business was being carried on by a manager, Mr Ivan Trevor Forgeson. “I am aware that the question of Saturday closing in New Brighton may come up for further consideration but this application should be granted; otherwise it will result in considerable hardship for the applicant company. The matter could be reconsidered when the exemptions of all the New Brighton shops is reviewed in the future. "It is highly desirable in the public interest that one rule should apply in New Brighton where Saturday opening is widespread,” the Tribunal said. “It would be unfair for the company to lose its exemption by merely moving across the road.”
