Television
Sir. —The elector who sought to obtain from Mr Holyoake some indication of his party's television policy at least got something. vague and nebulous though it was. Almost a year ago I wrote to the Leader of the Opposition and asked in slightly expanded form the same question. I am still waiting for a reply. Up till now I have been an enthusiastic advocate of television for New Zealand, but if the emphasis of the speaker at Timaru was any guide we are in for anything but entertainment. With culture, religion, and education as the basis of the programmes it is little wonder that both the Labour Party and their opposite members are obviously “marking tin e.” Ye gods! Do our leaders think that we are going to invest huge sums on New Zealandmade television sets to receive such heavy fare? It sounds so dull that the Third Programme seems like vaudeville by coniparison.—Yours, etc., W.H.T. April 29, 1960. y.
