SIX MEN CAUGHT AT SAWMILL
Charges Of Theft Laid Caught late last evening passing out wood and coal over the fence of a sawmill in Wairakei road, Harewood, by a hand-to-hand chain and loading it on to a small truck, six young men were arrested by the police and will face charges of theft. Four of them will appear in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, and two youths will appear in the Children’s Court. Four of the men were caught red-handed by a carload of detectives who arrived in response to a call from Constable P. B. Gilligan, of the Papanui police station, who noticed the men acting suspiciously while on suburban patrol last evening. Two others who hid themselves in the sawmill yard came out and gave themselves up when they heard the bark of the police dog, Ace, who had been brought to the scene by his handler, Constable W. J. Stickings. By the time they were disturbed, the men had passed out enough blocks of wood to fill three bags, and also had two bags full of coal in the back of their small, covered truck.
