U.S. MISSILE TESTS
Soviet Trawler Also On Scene
(N.Z. Press Assoctalion —Copyright) WASHINGTON. April 30.
A Soviet trawler was photographed yesterday within a mile of missile tests being conducted by the new American submarine George Washington.
The Soviet vessel was in international waters about 60 miles south of Long Island, New York. The photograph was taken from a United States Navy airship.
The Navy said the nuclearpowered submarine was conducting tests with dummy Polaris missiles when the Soviet ship, identified as the Vega, was siehted
The picture indicated that the Soviet ship was about 150 ft long and that it carried radar. American Associated Press said. Presumably the Vega, like most big trawlers, was also equipped with sonar, the underwater sound detection apparatus useful for spotting fish —or submarines, the news agency said. The Vega, after leaving the test scene, later was observed off Norfolk, Virginia, home base for most of the United States Atlantic Fleet. Since the testing site was in international waters, the Soviet craft had every legal right to be there.
