SHIPPING MERGER
P. And 0.-Orient Plans (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright; LONDON, April 30. The P. and O. Steam Navigation Company and the Orient Line, former shipping rivals now merged, will still own their respective ships and retain their distinctive colours and markings, it, was announced today. A statement said the two companies would hand over the management and operation of the ships to two new companies— P. and 0.-Orient Management, Ltd., and P. and 0.-Orient Lines Passenger Services, Ltd. The service offered by the fleets would be sold under the name of P. and 0.-Orient Lines. The parent company, the P. and O. will mostly confine itself to group responsibilities but will provide some central services for the benefit of the two newlyformed companies. It will be the employer of all shore staff of both and of all officers newly recruited after the date of amalgamation. The P. and O. and the Orient Line will still be direct employers of their existing sea-going staff. The Orient Line, however, will have no executive function.
Similar plans for integration in Australia from July 1 will be announced later. Sir Donald Anderson, chairman of the P. and O. will be chairman of the two new companies.
