Poneke scored a good win over Oriental when the Wellington club Rugby season • began last Saturday and it owed much to its captain, B. A. Blades. He is better known in Canterbury as a free-scoring batsman who, in recent seasons, has played for the WestUniversity senior team.

After an absence of seven years ERIC SPEAKE has returned to first division soccer. Speake, a forriter Canterbury representative, is •playing for the Rangers team this season. Although he has lost some of his former speed, he is still a reliable defender. His exhibition at full-back against the strong Shamrock forward line last Saturday was full of merit.

The Taranaki full-back, J. L. Bayly, came quite close at the national trials to adding to the Rugby :? record of his | family. His family tree boasts two All Blacks, Alfred ? (1893-94 - 97) ■ and Walter I (1894). Bayly played quite well in his I trial games, I capping his ■ previous displays with a game on the Thursday that far surpassed that of D. B. Clarke.

Although at 29 the oldest back chosen for the New Zealand team to tour South Africa, S. G. Bremner has said that he will definitely be playing for University in the Christchurch senior Rugby competition next year.

Two former New Zealand cricket captains took a particular interest in the women's golf championships at Shirley this week. In the first rpund of the Shirley Trophy, a match play handicap event, Mr* L B. Cromb beat Mr* M. L. Page. Their husbands both led New Zealand cricket teams. Mrs Cromb went on to win the event, and Mrs Page won the final of one of the flights, another match play contest.

An addition to the Canterbury Referees’ Association this year is Alan Gordon, son of the former Canterbury Football Association and former Canterbury and New Zealand soccer representative. M. A. Gordon. Although still at high school, Alan Gordon is rated highly as a referee.
