MUTTONBIRDS COST MORE
New Season Brings Price Rise "The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL, April 29 The price of mutton birds rose with the lending at Bluff of the first birds this season. One vessel brought in- more than 24,000 birds from eight or nine landings, but they were all salted birds, the result of a spell of rougher weather when the vessel visited the islands. These birds are selling at 4s 3d, and fresh ones when available will retail in the south, it is thought, at 5s a bird. The increases are fid and Is for salted and fresh over last years prices. While no official reason for'tfie incoease is available so far, it is understood that the increase in the fare for birders in the Government steamer Matai this year may account for some of it, and the birds are now much bigger and fatter. On some islands the birds were said to be less plentiful, many burrows being empty.
