RUNAWAY TRAM
Man Killed In Hobart HOBART, April 29. A man was killed and several children were badly injured in a spectacular tram smash in the centre of Hobart in peak hour traffic, late this afternoon. The tram’s brakes failed after a collision with a lorry in Elizabeth street, up a steep hill from the centre of the city. It reached almost 50 miles an hour as it careered towards the busy Friday afterno >n traffic striking several parked and moving vehicles as i; raced backwards down Elizabeth street. Finally it ploughed into another tram near the intersection of Liverpool street. Women, children ind other passengers were helped from the wreck with cuts and bruises as a relay of ambulances took the injured to hospital.
Hundreds of persons who swarmed around the scene of the smash had to be forced back by police reinforcements so that ambulance crews could get on with their work.
