WESTLAND CATTLE SOLD IN OTAGO
Use Made Of Haast Road Link (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, April 29. Cattle, and also timber, wmeh hitherto found its way from South Westland northwards, are now being sold to buyers in Central Otago This has been made possible by the construction of the road from Otago to Haast befor° that from Haast to Paringa The pioneers of this trade are the well-known Nolan family, who met a touring party of executive members of Federated Farmers of Otago. The result was a very successful sale of steers at Cromwell. Until recently, cattle for Otago had been taken over in two stages. Stock was driven to Burke’s Hut. at the junction of the Burke and Haast rivers, and were then sent on by road The journey to Cromwell from Westland took about six hours, and when the final stage of the Haast Pass road has been completed, towards the end of this year, there should be an appreciable saving in time. “The lorryload of cattle we sent to the Cromwell sale was purely experimental, but we were so satisfied with the returns that more will certainly follow," said Mr W. D Nolan.
