TOWN HALL PROJECT
Expert Opinion Sought
A proposal that an expert opinion on the town hall project as envisaged by Town Hall Promotion be obtained by the City Council, from outside Christchiii-ch if necessary, was put to the council’s town hall committee yesterday by representatives of Town Hall Promotion Cr. H. P. Smith, chairman of the committee, said after the meeting that there had been a full and useful discussion on the preliminary planning steps.
“They suggested that we should consider having an expert opinion on the whole scheme to have a town hall, with concert chamber, hall and conference rooms,” Cr. Smith said. Up to the present, planning had been for the town hall only. “We thought it was a helpful suggestion.” he continued “The committee concurs with Town Hall Promotion that thinking must be projected 50 years hence. When we have waited so long for the town hall we all want, then there is a need to plan to ensure that we have the best facilities possible.” Negotiations on the site for the town hall were continuing, said Cr. Smith, when asked for a progress report.
