As Others See Us
I Sir,—As another, but not dis- ' illusioned British immigrant, I | became a citizen of the Garden I City of Christchurch a few 'months ago. May I counter his | catalogue of criticism by stating 'that I believe this island capital | has much to commend it. Its progressive council, in a typical | spirit of British common sense iand compromise, combines the 'idealism of a left-wing Mayor iwith the efficiency of 100 per 'cent independent enterprise councillors. Surely we Pommies must be grateful to generations of [Kiwis for the amenities we already enjoy. If we have fault Ito find, it behoves us newcomers ■ito help light the lamps, pave the Iways, and provide the conveniences. It would be my pleasure one Saturday to take “D. 8.1. land any other disgruntled immigrants on a conducted tour of (civic achievements which I have already discovered. In my book, Christchurch is a city that cares, #nd the Kiwis are a great bunch ®f jokers, Mr Nordmeyer and all. L-Yours, etc., I S.J.S. April 25, 1960.
