CURRENT NOTES
English Speaking Union.—The president of the Canterbury Branch of the English Speaking Union (Mr W. Peers) welcomed Miss M. Bowen who has recently returned from London, at a meeting in Christchurch last evening. Miss Bowen has spent some years at the E.S.U. headquarters in London. The guest speaker was Mr W. R. Lascelles who spoke of his recent trip overseas with special reference to International affairs. Mr S. R. Dacre proposed a vote of thanks to the speaker.
Women War Workers.—The annual meeting of the Overseas Women War Workers’ Association was held recently at the home of Mr and Mrs J. L. Hay. Miss J. Okey presided. Officers were elected as follows; President, Miss J Okey; vice-presi-dents, Mrs J. L. Hay, Misses J Erwin and M. G. Havelaar; committee, Misses E, Hodges, C. Rogers, M. Christmas, E. Wilson and H. Ensor; secretary. Miss A. Fleming. Sandlland* - Wataoni Plunket Society:—Mrs J. W. Niven presided at the annual meeting of the Sandilands - Wainoni subbranch of the Plunket Society. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mrs K Brown; vicepresidents, Mesda’mes W. Mclntosh, J. Mcßae and I. Clephane; secretary. Mrs E. Stephens; treasurer. Mrs P. Mclntosh.
Country Girls’ Clubs.—The annual meeting of the Christchurch district committee of Country Gdrls’ Clubs was held recently at Rakaia, when the chairman (Miss B. Craw) presided. Delegates attended from Ashburton. Rakaia. Darfleld, Hororata, Ellesmere. Little River, Lincoln and Waihora clubs. Competitions will be held at Darfleld and a sports day at Little River. Officers elected were; Chairman, Miss J. Stalker (Waihora); vice-chairman, Miss F. Powell (Ellesmere); secretary. Miss E. Hart (Darfleld); treasurer, Miss E. Stone (Lincoln). Secretary Retires.—Mrs R. W. Borland, who has been secretary of the Home Economics Association, Christchurch for the last 20 years, has retired from office. When the association held its annual meeting recently, the president (Mrs L. V. Gain), paid tribute to the outstanding service Mrs Borland had given to the organisation.
Avonhead W.D.F.F.— Mrs H. Rule presided at the annual meeting of the Avonhead branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers. She referred to the report by the retiring president of the branch (Mrs B. le F. Martin) and the sound financial postiion of the branch. Officers were elected as follows: —President, Mrs G. W. Fairweather; vice-presidents, Mrs R. S. Royds. Mrs R. F. Smee, Mrs R. M. McPherson: secretary-treasurer, Mrs R. A. E. Dear: committee, Mrs J. E. Strachan, Mrs H. G. Riches. Mrs L. Caskell, Mrs A. R. Marks. Mrs L. Franks, Mrs Jaggar; competition steward, Mrs D. Martin; sales table, Mrs H. G. Riches; voting delegates, Mrs G. W. Fairweather, Mrs R. F. Smee. Mrs R. A. Dear; advisory member and trustee. Mrs R. M. McPherson.
