FIRE BOARD WREATHS
Estimate Of £l5O
“What is £l5O of unauthorised expenditure estimated for?” Mr A. S. Hollander asked at a meeting of the Christchurch Fire Board last evening.
“Wreaths,” replied the chairman (Mr W. R. Campbell). Mr Hollander was referring to an item in the board’s draft estimates which showed that £ 19 of a similar sum budgeted had been spent last year. “A hundred and fifty is a lot for wreaths,” Mr Hollander commented after the chairman’s answer.
“That is set down as the figure that was authorised by the Fire Service Council,” said Mr Campbell.
The sum used to be £5O, but about two years ago was altered to the present figure. “It’s for entertaining the press, is it not?” said Mr W. E. Olds amid laughter.
Mr Campbell said it might be an improvement if the items could be worded “contingencies.” “It’s local body parlance.” said the secretary, Mr S. F. Marshall. Mr Campbell: We did not have too many wreaths at £l9. I do not think anyone can say we have been wasteful under that head. The estimate was passed by the board without further discussion.
