COMMUNISTS’ CONGRESS
Mr Harry Pollitt In Auckland
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 15. Mr Harry Pollitt, chairman of the British Communist Party, is in Auckland with other topranking Communists from China and Australia. They are attending the national congress of the New Zealand Communist Party which opened in the city today. Mr Pollitt expects to be in New Zealand until “about the end of the month.” After the congress, he will tour the country, meeting members of the Communist Party here. In a telephone interview, Mr Pollitt said he was combining the position of “fraternal delegate” for the British Communist Party at the conference with “having a holiday.”
“I have never been out to this country before,” he said. “I am getting old (he is nearly 70) and I don’t think I’ll be out again. I have always wanted to see New Zealand.”
The Chinese delegates include Mr Chenyu, a member of the central committee of the Chinese Communist Party. Mr Wong Chingtai, secretary of the delegation, and Mr Lintang, an interpreter. They were met at the airport by about 50 local Chinese and Europeans, who welcomed them with flowers and Chinese songs.
