DEBUTANTES’ BALL
St. Albans Branch Of National Party
Three debutantes were presented to the Leader of the Opposition (Mr K. J. Holyoake) and Mrs Holyoake at the debutante ball of the St. Albans Electorate of the New Zealand National Party at the Winter Garden last evening. The debutantes, wearing white crinoline gowns, were presented by the wife of the chairman of the electorate (Mrs H. J. Walker). They were each given a white posy tied with blue and white ribbons, the party colours. They were Misses Marlene Mapplebeck, Judith Matthews, and Margaret Jamieson. The debutantes were trained by Miss E. Comyna-Thomas. Mr and Mrs H. J. Walker received the guests. Among those specially Invited were Mr E. P. Wills, chairman of the Canterbury-Westland division; Mr C. C. A. McLachlan, deputy-chairman CanterburyWestland division, and Mrs McLachlan; and Miss ComynsThomas.
Members of the ball committee were: Chairman, Mr H. J. Walker; secretary, Mrs J. E. Purchas; committee, Mesdames M. Woolley, W. E. Mapplebeck. Misses M. Rodgers, D. Vile, Messrs W. E. Mapplebeck, L. W. Pepperell, R. M. James, B. R. Hales. G. Johnstone, K. Hall, E. W. Pyle, H. L. Pickering, R. Lascelle’s.
Mrs Holyoake wore a swathed sheath of lurex brocade, patterned in turquoise, royal blue and green, with black velvet trim, and a royal blue tulle stole. Mrs Walker chose a strapless gown of jade delustred satin with a draped bodice. Folded panels embroidered tn sequin and diamante motifs gave back interest
A blush pink brocade gown patterned in silver was chosen by Mrs J.- E. Purchas. It featured a sweetheart neckline, and a pleated cummerbund drawn into a neat bow at the back.
