CONNON HALL WARDEN

Dr. Jane M. Soons Appointed Dr. Jane M. Soons, lecturer in geography at the University of Canterbury, has been appointed warden of Helen Connon Hall, the women students’ hostel at the corner of Park terrace and Chester street. She will hold both positions concurrently. Dr. Soons has been an exceedingly popular member of the academic staff since she arrived in Canterbury and, although she is young, she is considered well capable of taking charge of Connon Hall, which can accommodate 66 students. Overseas she had wide experience in managing walking parties and field expeditions in Britain, Norway, and on the Continent. Educated at Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ School, Dr. Soons graduated bachelor of arts with honours in geography in 1952 and also took the diploma and certificate of education from Sheffield University. She then completed her doctorate in philosophy at the University of Glasgow with a thesis on the geomorphology of the Ochil hills. From 1953 to 1956 she was an assistant in geography at Glasgow.

In 1957, Dr. Soons won a bursary of the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique for study at the Institute of Geography of the University of Strasbourg. She achieved a good command of French and a working knowledge of German. When she was appointed to the University of Canterbury, Dr. Soons was tutorial research fellow in geography at Bedford College, University of London. Dr. Soons will take up her appointment as warden on May 9.
