New Frigate’s Sea Trials
H.M.N.Z.S. Otago, the first of two frigates being built in the United Kingdom for the Royal New Zealand Navy, began her sea trials wearing the Red Ensign of the Merchant Navy. The sleek 2000-ton frigate, which will be a modern antisubmarine vessel, carried out steering trials of Spithead. Then she made an hour’s run at 50 per cent, of full power and reached a speed of 24 knots, says a Navy news summary.
On board Otago were representatives of her builders, Messrs J. Thomycroft, including the general manager. Mr I. Cameron, Admiralty experts and New Zealanders from the London liaison staff and the group which is standing by the ship during construction. Officer in charge of the trials was Captain C. N. Lentaigne, D. 5.0., R-N. (Retd.).
The ship’s modern galley, which Incorporates the latest laboursaving devices, was also used for the first time, producing an excellent hot meal for the trials party. The Otago will commission in June with a New Zealand ship’s company—when the White Ensign will replace the Merchant Navy flag—and is due home toward the i end of the year.
