DEATH OF MR H. HEY

Electrolytic Zinc Chairman (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, April 12. The chairman and managing director of the Electrolytic Zinc Company-of Australia, Ltd. (Mr Harry Hey) died yesterday in the Freemason’s Hospital, Melbourne, after a short illness. He was 67. Mr Hey, a leading Australian metallurgist, was a director of seven other companies including 1.C.1.A.N.Z., Ltd., Associated Pulp and Paper Mills, Ltd. He was born in Yorkshire, England and educated at Dewsbury, Yorkshire, and the Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand. He was president of the Australian Institute of Mineralogy and Metallurgy from 1943 to 1949 and won the A.I.M.M. Medal in 1951. Mr Hey joined the Electrolytic Zinc Company in 1917, became its chief metallurgist in 1927, technical superintendent in 1943 and was made a director in 1944. He became general manager in 1945 and managing director in 1947 and he had been the company’s chairman since 1952. Other companies of which Mr Hey was a director were the Burnie Board and Timber Company, Atlas Insurance Company, Ltd., Australia Fertilisers, Ltd., Paper Makers, Ltd., and the Ballarat Paper Company. He is survived by Mrs Hey, a married daughter and a son.

PLANS FOR NEW HOLDEN

Transmission To Be Automatic (N.Z. Press Associatiqn —Copyright) MELBOURNE, April 12. The Holden will have automatic transmission next year. The president of General Motors Corporation, United States, Mr John F. Gordon, has announced this in Melbourne. He said the Holden would not be cheaper, because prices announced early this year allowed for new advantages to go into the car in spite of higher costs. This amounted to a price cut. He said he could not say whether there would be a price war With Ford over its new Australian product, the Falcon. “But we in G.M. like to think that we are ready for any contingency,” he said. Listing pf Shares Mr Gordon said that no shares of General Motors would be available for subscription to Australians, but steps were being considered to list the shares of the United States parent company on Australian stock exchanges.
