FIRE SERVICES CONTROL
Changes Suggested By Mr Dean (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 1.2 The existing local government structure was in the best interests of urban fire services control, Mr S. S. Dean, chairman of the Fire Service Council, told .the Local Bills committee of the House of Representatives today. ■He said the council recommended that greater powers could be granted to the Local Government Commission, in conjunction with the Fire Service Council, to bring about the amalgamation of fire district areas', particularly in metropolitan areas, and that fire boards, as separate ad hoc authorities, be retained only in the case of united urban Are districts and in urban fire districts with a population in excess of 10,000.
Existing boards not coming within these classifications should be abolished and territorial local authorities be given the functions of urban fire authorities.
