A-POWER FOR ANTARCTIC

13m Dollars For Reactors

(Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, April 11

The Joint Congressional Atomic Energy Committee today recommended spending 13 million dollars on the initial construction of four nuclear reactors to provide power for the three United States Antarctic bases. The funds had not been requested by the Eisenhower Administration, but the Congressional committee included the sum in a bill authorising 251.476,000 dollars in expenditures by the Atomic Energy Commission in 1960-61.

Under the plan, discussed in hearings by a Congressional subcommittee last week, two reactors would be set up at McMurdo Sound, one at the South Pole base and another at Byrd Station.
