BY-ELECTION IN WAIMAIRI
Mr A. E. Wagner Elected ♦ A ;.. E ; Wa S ner was elected to the Waimairi County Council yesterday at a by-election for one of the two Fendalton riding seats. The by-election was caused by the deafh o f Mr T. W. Andrews. With a majority of 114 votes oyer the next highest candidate, Mr Wagner is assured of election, for there are only 141 special votes to be counted. The voting at the nine polling places yesterday represented a poll of between 22 per cent and 25 per cent. The provisional count was:— A. E. Wagner .. ..893 O. C. Mitchell .. ..779 W. J. W. Paulger ..• 116 Informal .. .. 5 Both Messrs Mitchell and Paulger stood at the triennial election last November, when the Fendalton seats were won by Mr A. R. Blank, now chairman of the council, and Mr Andrews. Mr Wagner was a new candidate. Aged 37, he was born and educated in Christchurch. During the war he served overseas as a lieutenant in the Royal New Zealand Navy. He is now a senior member of the sales staff of Andrews and Beaven, Ltd., for which firm he was for a time Auckland branch manager.
