Good Coach

Much of the success of the Christchurch West High School at the inter-secondary schools’ athletic sports at Rugby Park recently was due to the coaching of Mr B. Kerr, a teacher at the school and one of the best quarter milers in the Dominion. For many years West has gained a reputation for producing good middle distance runners and the performances at Rugby Park showed that this tendency is continuing. West athletes now take part in inter-club athletics every week and like athletes from other schools who compete regularly all the year they have a considerable advantage over athletes who start training only a few weeks before the sports. Training in track events under the supervision of Mr Kerr takes place every lunch hour in Hagley Park south, where the large area available makes it possible for all athletes to vary their training schedules. Another factor influencing the standard of athletics in the school is the dual meeting that takes place against Rangiora High School late in the third term. This means that competitors now have another big meeting to prepare for in addition to the inter-school sports.
