Spotted Shags Shot

Sir,—Two spotted shags were recently seen on the beach at Taylor’s Mistake, but they did not see anyone as their lives had been cut short by some vandal who had used a .22 rifle with deadly accuracy. Both birds had been killed with a single shot through the breast. When most people go to our beaches for recreation they accept the sea birds as part of the landscape, but this was the work of someone who recognised these birds only as a challenge to his accuracy with a rifle. Surely these harmless birds should be protected from callous vandals who would make our seaside cliffs and beaches into shooting galleries. —Yours, etc., PROTECT AND ENJOY. April 10, 1960.
