Auckland Man 100 Next Week
(New Ztalana Pres* Association) AUCKLAND, April 11. Mr Walter Reid; until recently doyen of the New Zealand motoring world, will be 100 on Easter Monday. He gave up driving last July because of a Rugby injury suffered 70 years ago. “Besides," he said today, "there are too many fools on. the road now I want to die in my bed.” Mr Reid "retired” from his garden two weeks ago because of the football injury—a twisted knee which had not bothered him for years. His wife, who is 82, fell at home three months ago and fractured a hip. She has been in the Middlemore Hospital ever since. Mr Reid, who visited her today, does not know when she will be home.
On his birthday next week, only close relatives will be there. "I've postponed any festivities until my wife is here,” he said. “It would be no pleasure for me if she was not there.”
