SHARP LIFT IN CALF VALUES AT TINWALD

Calves sold remarkably well at the * Ashburton county breeders* annual cattle sale at the Ttnwaid saleyards yesterday. An improvement in the general level of values had been expected. Compared with last year's fair, steer ealves looked to be £4 to £5 dearer and heifer calves at least £3 dearer. Steer calves sold at £2O or better quite regularly and the top price of the day was £27 reached on two occasions. By comparison breeding cows had a disappointing sale and were barely up to the values ruling a year ago. The Ashburton sale generally seems to command a premium over Addington rates and yesterday was no exception. The advance on Addington for calves was probably about 40s to 60s. The Ashburton cattle sale has not been going for very many years but it is now firmly established and growing in strength. Yesterday the over-all entry at 820 head was more than 200 head greater than last year when the total yarding was 616. The calf yarding increased from 538 last year to 707. Another pleasing feature of this year’s sale was the appearance of several new vendors.

County breeders had another reason to be well satisfied with their efforts yesterday. A man from outside the district with wide experience of cattle said that he had rarely seen such an evenly high standard yarding. There was little between the run and paddock cattle and the relatively narrow range that separated the prices paid for the top cattle and other cattle in the offering bore that out. The sale attracted a large gallery of buyers from all parts of the province with North Canterbury well represented, and it was difficult to get through the crush about the pens.

Big Margin

Steer calves enjoyed a particularly good market with the excellent top cattle bringing possibly £6 to £7 better than a year ago. The Estate L. J. Fechney (Westerfield), which topped the market last year at £2O 10s, yesterday received £27 for their top cut of 20 Shorthorns and the same price was received yesterday by D. L. and C. A. Hoss (Rushford, Westerfield) for 14 Aberdeen .Angus. Another 17 Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus Hereford cross from G. A. and G. D. Rountree (Alford Forest) earned £26 10s.

But it was not only the top cattle that sold well. There was a steady turnover at between £lB and £2l 10s and for a representative selection of 13 pens sold yesterday the average was better than £l9, which was more than 80s better than for cattle from the same vendors sold at last year’s sale.

Best Aberdeen Angus and

Aberdeen Angus cross cattle ranged from £22 10s to £27 with good at £lB to -JE2I 10s, and others at £l3 to £l6. Shorthorn and Shorthorn cross realised from £l5 10s to £27 and Herefords from £lB to £l9. Best paddock steer calves brought from £24 to £27, with good at £l7 to £2l, and the pick of the run cattle ranged from £l9 to £23 with* average to good at £l5 to £lB and others down to about £l3. Heifer Calves Up Heifer calves were also sharply dearer than last year and for eight pens of cattle sold yesterday at an average of about £l6 10s there was an improvement of between 60s and 80s on rates of a year ago. The Fechney estate topped last year’s heifer calf market at £l5 15s. Yesterday the best price of the day in this section was £2O 10s for 12 blacks from G. A. and G. D. Rountree (Alford Forest). Another four Aberdeen Angus cross cattle from the same vendors earned £2O. (. Gregory (Oak Flat, Westerfield) was close at hand with 14 Shorthorn Hereford cross making £2O 5s and W. A. Taylor (Drumhead, Montalto) was also paid £2O for 18 Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus Hereford cross. The Fechney Shorthorns brought to £l9 10s.

The fops of the Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus cross heifer calves lay between £l7 and £2O 10s, with average to good at £l4 to £l6. The pick of the Shorthorn and Shorthorn cross cattle made from £l6 15s to £2O 5s and average to good sorts in this classification, made from £l4 15s to £l6 15s. ' Herefords sold at £l6. Best paddock heifer calves realised from £l9 10s to £2O 10s, good £l6 to £lB and others £l3 to £l5. Good run cattle sold at about £l4 to £l6. Disappointing After the buoyant calf sale the disposal of a modest offering of breeding cows was something of anti-climax with rates no better than last year and possibly fractionally easier. The best of the offering sold from £2B to £34 with average at about £2l to £26. Apart from eight polled Hereford cows from T. A., Greig (Rothesay, Methven), which have been running with a polled Hereford bull, which realised £54, a single black cow from G. N. Grigg (Glengyle) made £34 and nine black cows mated with a black bull from P. C. Grigg (Surrey Hills) fetched £33. A handful of steers sold from £l6 for a 16-month-old to £54 for a black four-year-old and h ®" ers realised from £25 10s to £27 10s.

The provision of 38 new pens this year meant that calves no longer had to be contained in sheep pens surmounted by barbed wire barriers and there were none of the spectacular hurdling episodes of former years.
