ITCH-MITE PARASITE
“Wool Industry Endangered”
The parasite itch-mite was 3 potential danger to the sheep industry, said Mr R. G. Cummings at the South Island Veterinary Clubs’ conference yesterday.
The itch-mite matted the wool and gave stringy tips and was increasing in New Zealand. Little was known about the parasite and the two main dipping substances used by fanners did not eradicate it.
A remit asking that immediate investigations be made into its incidence and methods of control was passed by the conference. A remit supporting the vaccination of rams was passed. Mr van der Wouden said that the incidence of bearing troubles from rams not vaccinated was four times as great as from those vaccinated.
