RACING Roman Maid In Fast Five-Furlong Sprint

Roman Maid, probably Riccarton’s best sprinter engaged in the Great Easter Handicap, showed high speed over five furlongs on the plough at Riccarton on Saturday.

Ridden by R. B. Taggart, Roman Maid dashed over five furlongs in Imin 0 2-ssec, the last four in 48sec and the final three in 35 4-ssec. Obviously she has thrived since her campaign at Trenlham where she was runner-up to Uplands Lad in the Railway Handicap.

R. J. Skelton will ride Easter.

Roman Maid in the Great

Captain Hunt (O. Anning) went fast in a seven-furlong solo trial. He reeled off the distance in Imin 28sec, the last half mile in 48 4-5 sec and the final three furlongs in 36 4-ssec Waterfall (B. S. Dodds) and Whiobau (Anning) also ran seven furlongs in Imin 28sec, the last four in 50 l-ssec, and the final three in 37 l-ssec. Waterfall led Whiohau by a neck at the end. Pleasant Ways broke away from the seven furlongs clear of Jack Ashore (J. Leach) and was five lengths clear after running the last six in Imin 17 4-ssec, and the final four in 52 4-ssec.

Kent (Leach) ran six furlongs easily in Imin 23 l-ssec, the last four in 54 2-Ssec. Kent’s stablemate Stradbroke (P. J. Kempton) followed over six furlongs in Imin 22 3-ssec. Jimmy Hill (W. Hanlln) moved nicely over seven furlongs in Imin 32 l-ssec. He ran the first half mile in 51 3-ssec and the last half >n 53 3-ssec. On Terms The stablemates Motueka fKempton) and Tamarisk <C. T Wilson), were on terms ending seven furlongs in Imin 31 l-ssec. the last four in 51 2-ssec. and the final three in 38 3-ssec. They will represent J. S. Shaw’s stable, and will be bracketed in the Great Autumn Handicap. Kempton will be Motueka’s race rider.

Four Kings (Anning) made ground to finish seven furlongs alongside Disorder (S. Hepburn) in Imin 31 4-ssec, the last four in 49 2-ssec. King Lyn (W. Beck) also recorded Imin 31 4-ssec. This Great Autumn Handicap lightweight ran his last half mile in 52 3-ssec, and did his work well. Beck will ride him in the Great Autumn.

Roa (Hepburn) and Topa (Hanlin) recorded Imin 18 4-ssec for six furlongs, quickening for the last three furlongs in 38 l-ssec.

The stablemates Thumper (C. Clydesdale) and Kastanea (G Baldwin) ran- home from the mile in Imin 47 3-ssec, quickening for the last half mile, run in 52 l-ssec. They look bright and fit for their Easter racing from J. L. Barr’s stable.

Andaman (A. H. Eastwood) and Dice (Kempton) sprinted five furlongs in Imin 4 4-ssec, the last four in 52 l-ssec, and the final three in 39 3-ssec.

Magic Circle (Dodds) ran away from Count Pierre (L. McGuire) tn a nine-furlong trial. Magic Circle, six lengths clear at the end, ran the distance in Imin 59 4-ssec, the last mile in Imin 45 2- and the last half in 50 3-

Gay Tommy (Wilson) and Nehru (Kempton) recorded Inrin 31sec for seven furlongs, and ran the last three furlongs abreast in 37 4-ssec.

Royal City (T. McGill) and Flagon (Taggart) followed over seven furlongs in Imin 30 l-ssec, the last four strongly in 50 2-ssec. Saltash (A. H. Eastwood) and Corowa (M. Skelton) ran a mile in Imin 45 2-ssec, the last half in 51 4-ssec, and the final three furlongs in 38 4-ssec. They will be rival candidates in the Merivale Handicap on the first day of the C.J.C. autumn meeting. Not Extended

Romancing (McGuire) was going easily a neck in front of Pyrites (P. Graham) finishing five furlongs in Imin 5 l-ssec, the last four in 51 2-ssec.

Offend (McGuire) and Rome (J, I* Coulter) were paired over seven furlongs. They recorded Imin 30 l-ssec and 38 2-ssec for the last three furlongs. Keen to quicken, Olympic Flame (Kempton) ran the last three of five furlongs in 37 2-5 sec. She is a fit light-weight for the Great Easter Handicap. The two-year-olds Royal Bag 'M. Skelton) and Lyn Leigh (A. H. Eastwood) sprinted three furlongs in 38 4-ssec. Shoal (C. McDonald) finished her work by running three furlongs in 40sec. McCool (C. McDonald) did pace work over a round, and then ran in from the three furlongs in 38 4-ssec. Last Link (Kempton) recorded 39 3-ssec.

On the Na 7 grass Voysa (Wildermoth) and Fox Play (Hanlin) sprinted six furlongs in Imin 21 l-ssec, the first three in 38 3-5 sec, The lightly-raced Voysa shared well. Quite Able (A. H. Eastwood) started near the mile and a quarter on the outside of the course ’■'roper and ‘>amed up with his stablemates Hand Over (Wilson) and Cruisi.ig (Taggart) near the mile. They ran home from there in Imin 46 2-ssec, and sprinted the last half in 51 3-ssec. A. H. Eastwood will ride Quite Able in the Great Autumn Handicap.

Tickled Pink (Wilson) and Sir Pedro (A. H Eastwood) recorded Imin 19sec for six furlongs and 51 3-ssec for the last half mile.

Riders Suspended At Hastings

HASTINGS. April 10.

Two jockeys were suspended on separate charges of causing interference at Hastings no Saturday. ■ Glen, rider of Tungimoana in the Juvenile Handicap, was charged with causing interference to P a , r . lez < K - s - Cullen) near the half-mile. After hearing from the patrol steward and the riders concerned. the committee found Glen guilty and suspended him from the conclusion of the day's racing up to and including April IS. After the Ta Mahanga Handicap an inquiry was held into interference near the half-furlong by the second horse, Ruve (J. T 7 Anderson) to the fourth horse, Mediterranean ridden by C. A. Bowry, and Anderton was charged with causing interference.

After hearing from the stipendiary steward, the patrol steward, the riders concerned, and from their own observations, the committee found that Ruve had seriously interfered with Mediterranean and decided to relegate Ruve to fourth and promote Mediterranean to third. Marquita was promoted to second. J. T. Anderson, the rider of Ruve, was found guilty and suspended from the conclusion of the day’s racing up to and including April 18.
