FLOODS IN U.S.
Mississippi Dropping
(N.Z. Press Association-Copyright) NEW YORK, April 8.
Weary flood fighters maintained their watch and worked on weakened dykes along the surging Mississippi and Missouri rivers today and appeared more hopeful than they have in days. However, officials expressed concern of possible breaks in some of the earthern dykes, which have been pounded by the swollen rivers for more than a week.
The Mississippi dropped steadily north of Quincy, Illinois, but downstream the crest was yet to come and workers bolstered the soggy flood walls on both sides of the river.
The floods along the two big rivers in the last two weeks have caused an estimated 18 million' dollars worth of damage.
