Roman Catholic Schools
St Mary's College A team won the Bishop Lyons Shield when the annual Roman Catholic secondary achools’ speaking competitions were concluded in Christchurch last evening. Fourteen teams from 11 schools took part. A The 1960 New Zealand Rugby tour to South Africa was the subject of the debating contest, won by the St. Mary’s College B team. Although the standard of speaking had been high, some competitors had tolled to grasp fully the fact that we essence of debating was argument based on reason and not emotion, said the judge (Mr B. J. WateoQ). The question of whether money « present being used for oil exploitation should be used for uranium development on the West f-oast was a popular subject in the impromptu speech competition. This contest was won by A. M. Donnelly, “the St. Bede's A team. .Other competitions contested by Ashburton, Timaru, Hokitika and Greymouth as well as Christchurch schools, included oratory, elocution •nd religious questions.
