NEW SPORTS STADIUM

£31,400 Tender Accepted

A £31,400 tender has been accepted by the City Council for building the indoor sports stadium at Cuthbert’s Green in Pages road. The successful tenderer is F. W. Matthews, Ltd. Work will begin immediately, and Cr. W. J. Cowles, chairman of the council’s reserves committee, hopes that it will be possible to have the building ready by September.

Cr. Cowles was chairman of a special sub-committee authorised by the council last month to consider designs for the building and to accept a tender. He said the tender accepted was for the whole job. Consideration had been given to having the shell built as a contract, with a separate contract for the flooring. “Shortly after Easter there will be a meeting called of all the sporting bodies interested in the new stadium so thpy can see the plan and discuss the amenities necessary for their sports.” Cr. Cowles said.

When a meeting was held last year, sports represented included roller skating, fencing, athletics, indoor basketball, badminton, weight-lifting, wrestling, boxing, indoor bowls, lawn tennis, table tennis and squash rackets.
