FIRE FIGHTER SAVED

Collapsed In Burning House (New Zealand. Press Association) . AUCKLAND, April 3. Braving suffocating smoke and intense heat, a Ruakaka Surf Club member, Mr B. Taylor, entered a burning house at Ruakaka this morning to save the life of a fire-fighter who had collapsed. He dragged the unconscious man, Mr T. Carr, also of Ruakaka, clear of the blaze only a few minutes before the house became a mass of flame. Mr Carr was not injured and soon recovered. He did not require medical attention. The house, which was owned by Dr. Eva Hill, was destroyed The fire broke out at 10 a.m., and by the time the Waipu Fire Brigade arrived 20 minutes later it was beyond control. Dr. Hill, her married son and his wife and two children had left earlier in the day to go fishing. Mr Carr was overcome by smoke while trying to salvage effects. Realising that Mr Carr had not left the house Mr Taylor went in for him. He found Mr Carr collapsed in one of the rooms and carried him to safety. It was a very fine rescue indeed, said the chief fire officer •Mr L. Sumner). The heat was terrific. Only a few household possessions were saved.
