NEWS MEAT MARKETS

Thirty Countries Listed

One of the most desirable objectives in New Zealand’s meat trade is the establishment of new markets outside the United King, dom to ease the pressure of supplies on the main outlet, but this goal is not easy of achievement as has lately been shown by the sitting of the Tariff Commission in the United States and the opposition of local producers there to imports which they feel are a threat to their livelihood. It is, however, heartening to see that in addition to the prospect of active collaboration between the Meat Board and exporters .in developing new markets, this job is going on steadily. A British-owned company with interests in New Zealand has announced this week that last year it sent 27 per cent, of its meat exports from New Zealand to markets outside the United Kingdom.

Thirty countries received its meat. They included the United States, Canada, West Indies, Japan, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Italy, Holland, Germany, Belgium, the Philippines, Panama, Sweden, Malaya, Australia, Hong Kong, France, Arabia, South Africa, Switzerland, Denmark, West Africa, India, Ira a Peru Ceylon, East Africa, Czechoslovakia and Norway. The South Island manager of the company, Mr T. C. H. Miller, said that in the current season up to the end of March sales to other markets were ahead of those at the same time last year.
