WORK AT SKI FIELDS
With the prospect of an early winter, ski clubs in both the North and South Islands are preparing for the coming season. Clubs in Canterbury are packing a most of the winter supplies a the form of tow rope, motor fuel and bulk stores. In Hastings, the Tongariro National Park Board recently deterred decision on an application by a Palmerston North skier to biild a rope tow on the national downhill course at Mount Ruapehu. Ruapehu Alpine Lifts, which (perates the existing lifts and tows, has pre-emptive rights to build ski tows over a major part if the winter sports area at Ruapehu. This move is the result of were over-crowding on the tuir-lifts on the mountain at peak periods during the winter. Waits c! half an hour or much more are comm® at some week-ends. A for another new ski (rid in. the vast potential of the South tJsland alps is afoot near Cardrdta. in Central Otago. Egher than either of the fields i Rock and Pillar or Coronet tak, the new ground has been preyed and found to hold snow k much longer periods than hber of the other two fields, bad access is at present being built, and the field should be in » by next year.
