MODEL TRAFFIC AREA
Stumps Being Cleared Stumps and butts of trees are now being cleared from the Westburn terrace reserve'in preparation for the construction of a model traffic area there. The work of clearing the 34 large stumps and tree butts and preparing the ground is being done by the staff of the Waimairi County Council. A contract at £1970 has been let to Mr P. A. Riley for the construction of the model area and it is hoped that work will begin on it next week. That amount will be contributed by the Government. The Waimairi County Council made about three acres of the Westburn terrace reserve available to the Transport Department and the work is being done under the supervision of Mr D. P. McLellan, the county engineer. The area, the first of its kind in New Zealand, is for use aft a permanent training ground where Transport Department road traffic instructors can give practical instruction in road safety to children. It will have intersections. one-way streets, railway crossings, pedestrian crossings, traffic lanes, traffic signs. a roundabout, a one-way bridge and a country road. Westburn terrace runs from Greers road to Grahams road and is almost parallel with Memorial avenue.
