FISHING BOAT AGROUND
Owner-Skipper Swims Ashore (New Zealand Press Association) TIMARU, April 1. The Timaru fishing boat, Te Kinga, Is aground on the beech about half a mile south of Jack’s Point lighthouse. It is reported that the mishap occurred late on Thursday night or early. this morning. Her owner-skipper, Mr J. Curtis, of 10 Matilda street, Timaru, is safe. The Timaru fishing fleet radio operator (Mrs M. E. Clausen), said last night the Te Kinga' left Timaru harbour about 6 p.m. on Thursday. It was believed that the boat developed steering gear trouble and Mr Curtis anchored her between Patiti Point and Jack’s Point and swam ashore to get help. When he returned in another fishing vessel, the Te Kinga had disappeared. She was later discovered on the beach south of Jack’s Point. Mrs Clausen said a strong southerly was blowing on Friday morning and it appeared that the Te Kinga had dragged her anchor.
