LAUNCH IN DISTRESS
Aground On Reef
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 1.
The launch My Happiness with four persons aboard, sent out distress signals shortly after running aground on a reef near Kawa’u Island late tonight. The police launch Lady Shirley sailed immediately after radio signals were picked up by Musick Point radio at 10.55 p.m.
The signals said the situation was desperate and that the launch was making water fast. The launch had a dinghy in tow. The sea is said to be calm. The reef is between Motoketekete Light and Kaway Island. My Happiness is owned by Mr Cyril Freeman, who built the 34foot launch himself and lives on board. A fisherman from Warkworth, Mr P. Dawson, left Warkworth with Constable J. B. Wakelin shortly after the distress signals were received. They are likely to arrive before the Lady Shirley.
