SHIPOWNER’S REPLY TO MR ORMOND’S CRITICISM

WELLINGTON, April 1. The companies associated on the Overseas Shipowners’ Committee had, in recent years, assisted New Zealand to develop new markets and formed the Crusader Shipping Company to provide small refrigerated vessels for this purpose, said Mr K. H. Churchouse, chairman of the Overseas Shipowners’ Committee, in a statement released today. Mr Churchouse was replying to a statement made by the chairman of the board, Mr J. D. Ormond) in which he criticised shipping services. “World-wide markets have been constantly serviced by our ships,” said Mr Churchouse. “Diversified trade has been developed to some 30-odd destinations covering areas outside their traditional routes to the United Kingdom and Europe, Genoa, and east coast ports of North America. “Services for some years*have been extended or inaugurated to cover areas as far apart as Japan, South Africa, east and west-coasts of South America, and west coast
of North America, West Indies, and the Mediterranean, in an all-out endeavour to assist New Zealand to develop world-wide* markets for her primary products. , ‘‘lt is, of course, the intention of the lines to continue to develop trade to all aretis of the world where New Zealand attempts to find new markets. “The lines are constantly reviewing their building programmes to ensure that suitable ships are available to assist New Zealand to maintain her traditional markets and furthering her interests in new, markets.”
