Phipps) told “The Press” yesterday. There remained a great deal to be done with the co-operation of fishermen themselves. The Navy was keeping a record of foreign movements in fishing waters around the Dominion and he hoped that there would be an increase in the Fisheries Protection. Squadron which, at present, had two vessels operating of the four fully equipped to da so. Admiral Phipps said he thought that Foreign movements being plotted by the Navy were “mostly exploratory.” “But they could be a straw in the wind and we may expect greater attention in the future,” he said. Admiral Phipps said that taking up his present appointment he felt it necessary to remind people that New Zealand depended for its prosperity and progress on overseas trade. “It is unthinkable that New Zealand would not appreciate it must always see to the continuation of that trade in peace and war,” he said. “I also think it is necessary to appreciate the relationship between air transport and sea transport; to appreciate that for every ton of cargo flown out of New Zealand a like amount of fuel is seaborne. It is interesting to reflect that all air-freight-ing alone in New Zealand in a year is done on seaborne fuel. And the year’s air-freight could be carried in a week by the little tanker that brings the fuel.”
