FROTH RUNS SECOND

Rawson Stakes At Rosehill (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, March 27. Bookmakers expect a heavy demand for the New Zealand mare Froth in the Sydney Cup after her great battle in the nine-furlong Rawson Stakes at Rosehill yesterday. Bardshah won by a head from Froth, with the odds-on favourite. Noholme, third. Froth carried 8-13. She has 9-1 in the two-mile cup on April 18, and the same weight in the mile Doncaster Handicap on Easter Saturday, April 16. Bardshah, on the other hand, drops from 9-0 today to 8-7 in the cup. Froth surprised racegoers when she dashed to the front at the start and tried to lead all the way. Noholme, which was expected to lead, was in fourth place, and held that position on the rails most of the way. Froth, having her first start in Australia, fought on well when challenged by Bardshah near the end. She was narrowly beaten into second place. Bookmakers were so impressed with the run that they immediately cut her straight-out price for the Sydney Cup by nine points. This makes her second favourite to MacDougal and Nilarco. Trainer Pleased Her trainer, D. Jones, said he was very pleased with Froth's performance. He said Froth probably would have her next start in the Chipping Norton Stakes at Warwick Farm next Saturday. The early pace was slow. Froth took 13jsec for the first furlong 24jsec for the two furlongs, and 37fsec for three furlongs. The first five furlongs took Imin 2}sec, and the first six Imin 15sec. Bardshah held second place most of the way, well behind Froth, but well clear of Noholme and Royal Jester, which were next. Noholme gave Froth a long start on the turn into the straight. Then Sellwood shook Noholme up and the colt made a run. At the same time Bardshah came up on the outside of Froth. In the Railway Quality Handicap there was solid support yesterday for the New Zealand horse Somain, which started at 10 to 1 after firming from 14 to 1 to 9 to 1.
