Trap Shooting N.Z. MEETING CONTINUES

Four Possibles In Main Event Although the weather on Saturday was again unkind to the Dominion’s leading trap shooters who have gathered in Christchurch to compete for national honours on the Christcurch Gun Club’s grounds at Yaldhurst, entries continued to be high, with a record of 169 for the 20-target trophy match. With low temperatures, showers and a strong southerly wind, most of the shooters found the targets elusive, there being only four possibles in the 30-target event, the main handicap event of the tournament. These were scored by R. James (Auckland), C. Hartley (Tauranga), and L. Lanauze and E. F. Bearman, both of Christchurch, who have been competing in national tournaments for many years and with their experience are always at a slight advantage when conditions are difficult. Lanauze was national singlerise champion in 1954, and James runner-up for this title last year. Hartley has several times been highest scorer of the New Zealand team in the Mclntosh international teams match, which is shot for annually among teams representing various countries of the Commonwealth, while Bearman, an expert in all branches of the sport, is also the popular caretaker of the Christchurch Gun Club. The tournament will continue today with the New Zealand single-rise championship, the premier event on the New Zealand trap shooting cauendar and entries are likely to exceed 200 should the weather be fine. J. C. Streeter (Amberley) the present champion, will be defending his title, and as his form earlier in the tournament has shown, a high score will be needed by any shooter who hopes to take the championship. Leading contenders for the A. N. Turner memorial trophy, which is awarded annually to the highest aggregate over the skeet, single and double rise championships, are C. J. Benton (New Plymouth), A. J. Donald (Otahuti), J. A. S. McKenzie (Seaward Downs), J. C. Streeter (Amberley), C. Hartley (Tauranga), H. C. Walker (Hakataramea), T. Everett (Christchurch), J. R. Thompson (Tokoroa), R. Hughes (Putaruru), E. Benton (Te Awamutu), W. T. Morton (Christchurch), and L. Ji Eden (Greenpark). Saturday’s results were:— £5OO Handicap. 30 Targets (141 entries).—Possibles: R.
