SKYSCRAPER IN AUCKLAND
Start Expected In November (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 27. Construction of a 23-storeyed skyscraper for Kerridge-Odeon should begin next November, said. Mr R. J. Kerridge, managingdirector of Kerridge-Odeon. at the week-end. The skyscraper, which will cost £l.sm, will be 260 ft tall—3fift higher than the projected 17storeyed administration block for the Auckland City Council. The town planning committee of the Auckland City Council has approved the project and decided to recommend that the council agree to it. subject to one modification. The committee’s approval, said Mr Kerridge. would hasten the completion of plans to have American architects and engineers working with New Zealand firms on the project. It is hoped to begin the demolition of the New Majestic Theatre, on the site of the proposed skvseraper, next September or October, he said. This would mean that structural work could begin in November and the building would be well under wav early in the new year. The committee approved the building, subject to an alteration being made to the Queen street entrance. Mr Kerridge said this made little difference to the building, and if anything would improve it.
