PEOPLE IN THE PLAY

In his first international match, the Canterbury bowler, R. C. Metz, acquitted himself

p a rticularlj well. Hi; bowl 1 n j figures certainly did no flatter him, foi he had several chances missed. It was a pity tha> when he batted he was not able to plaj his usual free

game. As a forcing batsman Motz has a useful future. ★ The New Zealand cricket captain, J. R. Reid, is clearly the most successful all-rounder the Dominion has produced. With a batting aggregate of more than 10.000, he has only B. Sutcliffe ahead of him. He needs only one wicket in the match now being played at Dunedin to become the ninth New Zealand bowler to take 300 wickets. None of the other eight has been an outstanding batsman. ★ The national women's surf race champion, Miss Anne Blair, of South Brighton, who is a most versatile swimmer, won the women’s surf ski race at the New Brighton jubilee carnival.

The former New Zealand junior harrier champion, John Herrick, will be a candidate for the University team to tour Australia in May. A student at Lincoln College, Herrick has been working on a farm in the Waikato as part of the practical work for his course.

The winning of a Canterbury athletic title by John Sampson (Ashburton) was an extremely meritorious effort. Having only his second throw of the season, Sampson took the junior javelin title with a distance of 166 ft 6in. Sampson was unable to train with the javelin during the season because of a broken arm.

One of the outstanding performances at the national swimming championships at Blenheim last week was Len Hodge’s third win in the dive to maintain his unbeaten national record. Few present at the meeting realised that Hodge changed his hurdle only two weeks before the championships as a result of the latest information from Russia, which is concentrating on diving for the Rome Olympics.
